HCR2060 "Secure the Border Act" Moved through the State Senate House: A Moment of Grief and Renewed Resolve for Justice

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Phoenix, AZ – May 23, 2024] – Our communities stand in deep lament as HCR2060, the deeply divisive "Secure the Border Act," passed through the Senate in the Arizona Legislature yesterday. This outcome represents a significant setback for justice, equality, and compassion in our state.

Despite the valiant efforts of Arizona Faith Network, Corazón Arizona, and partners in serving interfaith communities, the passage of HCR2060 represents a failure to uphold the fundamental rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. Our hearts are heavy as we witness the consequences of this misguided legislation.

The debate preceding the vote was marked by a tone of hostility and harsh rhetoric, which only deepened the divide within our community. The passage of HCR2060 reflects a troubling trend towards exclusion and division, rather than inclusion and solidarity.

“By criminalizing unauthorized entry and imposing penalties, this legislation perpetuates fear and marginalization within communities. It threatens to tear apart families, sow distrust between law enforcement and residents, and undermine the very fabric of our society,” stated Alicia Contreras Alas, Executive Director of Corazón Arizona. “This fight isn’t over. We are organizing, and Arizonans will reject this legislation if it heads to the ballot. We urge the members of the Arizona House of Representatives to stand on the right side of history and stop this bill now.”

Rev. Katie Sexton, Executive Director of Arizona Faith Network, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing “The passage of HCR2060 is a heartbreaking moment for our state, yet it also strengthens our resolve to fight for justice. Our diverse faith communities have always been a source of strength and resilience for Arizona. This legislation challenges our values of compassion and unity, but it will not diminish our commitment. We believe that the diversity of our state is its greatest strength, and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect and uplift every member of our community, standing against policies that seek to divide and harm. Together, we will strive to create a future where justice, equality, and inclusion prevail."

In the wake of this devastating decision, Pastor Jimy Martinez, Community Pastor of Neighborhood Ministries, lamented "As a pastor deeply rooted in the South-Central Phoenix community, I am heartbroken by the passage of HCR2060. This legislation represents a significant setback for justice and compassion in our state. It perpetuates fear and marginalization within immigrant communities and undermines the principles of inclusivity and solidarity that are central to our faith. We must continue to advocate tirelessly for policies that uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status."

As we grieve this loss, we also recommit ourselves to the fight for justice and equality. Arizona Faith Network, Corazón Arizona, and our allies refuse to be deterred by this setback. We will continue to stand in solidarity with immigrant communities, advocating for policies that uphold the inherent dignity and worth of every individual.

Our work is far from over. In the face of adversity, we call on the House to stop this harmful legislation and remain steadfast in our pursuit of a more just and inclusive society for all.
